McKaskle Farms

Kaye and Steve McKaskle have carried on the families’ five generation tradition of farming in Braggadocio, Missouri. In 1973, they first began with conventional cotton and soybean farming. Then in 1992, Steve was invited to attend the first Organic Cotton Growers meeting in the delta. The organic premium price was enticing to the McKaskles and they began the transition from conventional to organic farming.

Forward thinking companies, like Patagonia® and Nike® were among the first customers to purchase their cotton. The McKaskles now farm over 2000 acres organically. They are cultivating a wide array of organic crops including: popcorn, Basmati and Long Grain rice varieties, soybeans, corn, cotton and oats. The McKaskles are one of the early pioneers of organic farming in Missouri.

Despite the many challenges associated with organic farming it has been a rewarding endeavor. In Steve’s words, “It was and still is the right thing to do.”
